OpenVPN Connect is the « official » application from OpenVPN Inc. and is intended to be more user-friendly VPN users with little technical experience. It’s not as feature-rich openvpn for Android, which is geared towards more advanced OpenVPN users.
Openvpn for Android Openvpn for Android, a free and open-source application developed by Arne Schwarzbe, enables you to connect with any VPN service that uses the OpenVPN protocol. It’s a great choice for devices that aren’t compatible with pre-configured « off the shelf » VPN apps that are available in the Google Play Store. The setup process is fairly straightforward. It is necessary to import the VPN profile files. (The configuration files are named.ovpn). These files can be downloaded from your VPN provider’s site or via live chat support.
When you’ve imported a profile, tap one of the servers in the list and connect to that server. Once connected to the server, your Internet traffic will be directed via a secure channel to the server you’ve selected in the app. The Status tab allows you to check your connection’s details and the status. A kill switch is always turned on by default, and it will shut down your Internet connections when the VPN tunnel stops.
The application provides a per-app VPN as also an option that is always on that automatically establishes an VPN connection each time the app is opened and continues running after your device has gone to sleep or switched networks. However, the latter feature requires Android 7.0 or higher and may drain your battery more than usual.
